Tour du Mont Blanc FAQs: Everything You Need to Know Before You Hike

Ah, the Tour du Mont Blanc – one of Europe’s most legendary treks. Circling the Mont Blanc massif through France, Italy, and Switzerland, it’s a bucket-list adventure with Alpine charm, dramatic scenery, and thigh-burning switchbacks. But before you lace up your boots and grab your trekking poles, here’s everything you need to know in one handy (and very honest) guide. Let’s get stuck in.

🕐 How long does it take to do the Tour du Mont Blanc?

The full TMB trek typically takes at least 9 days of walking. But if you love a scenic photo stop (or ten), or just enjoy taking your time, many people stretch it over 10–12 days. We will be doing it over 10 days!


📏 How long is the Tour du Mont Blanc?

It depends on your route and variants, but the full loop covers 160 to 170 kilometres, with a juicy 10,000 metres of elevation gain and loss. Your calves will thank you later.


🗓️ When’s the best time to hike the TMB?

The sweet spot is June to September. Here's how the seasons shape up:

  • Early June: Quiet trails, but snow still lingers on the higher passes. Best for experienced hikers or those in guided groups.

  • Mid-July to Mid-August: Peak season! Expect more hikers (and a proper international vibe).

  • Late August to September: Milder days, fewer people, and huts still open. A top choice if you prefer peaceful trails. We will be trekking in early September: 5th-15th.


🌦️ What’s the weather like during the TMB?

Your guess is as good as ours. Alpine weather is unpredictable, so come prepared for sun, rain, and possibly snow – all in one day. Check forecasts a week before your trek. We recommend MeteoBlue for reliable updates.


🛏️ Where should I stay before/after the trek?

Here are some great options, depending on where you're based:

✈️ What’s the closest airport and how do I get there?

The closest airport is Geneva (Switzerland).

From there, you've got options:

  • Book a private transfer through us (easy peasy).

  • Hop on a direct coach (Flixbus or Blablabus).

  • Or brave the train – scenic, yes, but a bit of a faff with multiple changes.


What time do we finish on the last day?

We aim to arrive in Chamonix between 4 and 5pm on the final day of the trek, depending on the group’s pace and the journey back. No need to rush home though – we include a final night’s stay to help you rest and recover. Your legs will be grateful.


💤 What do I need to sleep in a mountain refuge?

Refuges provide blankets, but bring a sleeping liner (mandatory) for hygiene. Sleeping bags aren’t allowed in mountain huts.

Also handy:

  • A headlamp

  • Earplugs (snorers, we’re looking at you)

  • A warm layer for chilly evenings


🍽️ Do I need to sort my own meals?

Nope! We've got you covered.

  • Breakfast and dinner are provided in the refuges and inns.

  • Picnics are home-made daily by our chef using fresh ingredients.

Only extra snacks and drinks (other than water) are on you.


🚫 Food allergies? Vegan or vegetarian?

No problem! We cater for dietary needs, just let us know when you book.


👚 What should I wear on the TMB?

Go for the three-layer rule:

  1. Base layer – breathable and moisture-wicking (synthetic or merino wool)

  2. Insulating layer – fleece or similar

  3. Waterproof shell – a solid hiking jacket for rain and wind

And remember – layers = magic. Easy to take on/off as the weather flips.


🥾 What kind of hiking boots should I wear?

Choose sturdy high-ankle hiking boots with:

  • Good grip

  • Waterproof membrane (hello, Gore-Tex!)

  • Supportive sole


Don’t bring them new. Blisters and TMB are a terrible combo.


🎒 Which backpack is best?

A 40L backpack with a comfy fit is ideal. Look for:

  • Wide shoulder straps

  • Supportive waist belt

  • Multiple compartments (so you’re not digging for your snacks every break)


❄️ Do I need crampons?

Maybe – especially in early season (June) when snow can still blanket higher passes. You could bring anti-slip crampons just in case, or rent them from us.


We’ll update you on snow conditions in our WhatsApp group before the trek.

💼 Suitcase or soft bag for luggage transfer?

One soft bag (max 12kg) is transported for you between each accommodation – no need to haul your life on your back. You’ll just carry a 30L-ish daypack with the essentials.


⚠️ Note: If we stay at Refuge Bonatti on Day 5, you won’t have luggage access that night. Pack two days’ worth of gear in your rucksack.


💸 What’s included in the booking price?

Everything you actually need:

  • Qualified mountain guide

  • Accommodation with showers and facilities

  • All meals (breakfast, dinner, homemade picnics)

  • Luggage transfer between stops

  • Transfers/cable cars listed in the itinerary

  • Hosted by ROSA founder Janire


Not included: Travel insurance (mandatory), transport to/from trek start, gear, additional drinks, and your pre/post-trek stays.


💪 Am I fit enough for the TMB?

The Tour du Mont Blanc is rated 3/5: Challenging treks. Don’t panic – you don’t need to be a marathon runner, but some prep will go a long way.


Ideally, you should have some hiking or trekking experience under your belt (even just a couple of day hikes!). That said, any beginner in good shape can join – especially with a supportive guide and group. And that’s exactly what we’re here for.


You’ll be walking between 6 and 8 hours a day, with some tougher sections, especially if you're trekking early in the season when snow still lingers on the passes. Expect to climb around 1,000m (3,300 ft) a day, and yes – on repeat.


How to prepare?

Start a training routine at least 2 months before your trip. Regular endurance exercise – think hiking, running, cycling, swimming – will build up your fitness. Mix in some hilly walks with a backpack to simulate the real thing.


Most importantly?

Listen to your body, rest when needed!

We’re also planning a free guided group hike along the Edale Skyline in the Peak District as a training day for those booked onto the trip. Spring or summer 2026 – date TBC!

Our guides are trained to help, and we’ll make sure you’re taken care of. If needed, we’ll get you to a hospital – no drama, just support.


Make sure your travel insurance is up to date and covers trekking.
